What is SEN?

SEN stands for Special Educational Needs.

A child who has Special Educational Needs is a child who needs extra help with their learning.

How will my child be helped?

Each child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which sets out their next learning steps for the coming term.

Teachers and parents talk through this plan so that adults and children can work together to achieve the targets.

Most children with an IEP will be supported by completing key learning activities in a small group.  Some children will receive individual support in addition to this small group work.

What if my child finds it difficult to make progress?

For children who find it difficult to learn despite small group support we invite SEN agencies that work closely with the school to come in and work alongside individual children to assess their learning needs.  This invitation will only occur after talking the issues through with parents and with your full agreement.

Who might be invited in?

Educational Psychology Service:

Our Educational Psychologist is Mr. Malcolm Allebon.  The role of the Educational Psychologist is to find out how children think, learn and behave.

Learning Support Service:

Our link advisory teacher is, Mrs. Janet Richards.  The Learning Support Service completes specific assessments in the areas of literacy, numeracy and language.  This service may assist schools and families in ascertaining whether or not a child has a dyslexic profile.

Speech and Language Service:

Our link speech therapist is Ms Sarah Harvie.  This service supports children who have difficulty understanding spoken words, putting their ideas together to talk to others or speaking clearly.

Mental Health Service

Our link nurse is Ms Sue Thornton.  This agency supports children and families who are struggling with issues related to managing emotion.

Paediatric Service:

Our community paediatrician is Dr. Dandawate.  He meets with children and parents to support when the concerns are of a medical nature or where a child is finding it difficult to manage their behaviour.

If you have any concerns or questions regarding SEN please speak with your child's teacher, the SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) or the Headteacher, Mrs. Bunting.
