Half Termly Home Learning Projects - OCTOBER 2010

BRIGHT SPARKS

Year 2's Home Learning for the current project 'Bright Sparks' is following on from the Electricity Museum trip. We would like all children to produce a poster showing us everything that they know about electricity. It can use photos, pictures, drawings, writing or any other way.

2009 Project

In Year 2 children experience a full and varied curriculum in which learning is made meaningful and fun and is enjoyed by everyone. Through careful teacher assessment the children progress in their basic skills and expand their knowledge in different contexts to achieve success.

Year 2 started the Autumn term with 'The Global Child' project. Each child produced a unique profile about themselves including their achievements so far and their ambitions for the future. This reminded the children of their rights and responsibilities within the school and within the 'bigger world'.

'Bright Sparks' was our next creative project led by the core values of independence. It developed the children as scientists enabling them to explore, test and understand electricity. This project started with a visit to the Electricity Museum in Christchurch and ended with them producing their own light-up model bedrooms. This proved a great success and the children loved designing their ideal rooms and making circuits.

'Monster Makeover' began with an exciting visit from a monster called Mozzie who had no friends and no manners! The children's challenge was to demonstrate why good behaviour and politeness is important. This was done through fictional and narrative writing. The children really enjoyed this project as it appealed to their imagination and was led by the core value of creativity enabling them to produce some wonderful artwork including clay models and finger puppets.

The Spring term started with a new creative project designed to improve literacy and numeracy skills. 'The Happily Ever After' topic was introduced by a wonderful drama workshop where the children role played various characters from well-known fairy tales. The project has fired the children's imagination and they are working towards producing a large class book as well as independent home learning.

Our future projects will be 'Time Travellers' where the Tardis will take children back through time to meet famous historical figures and 'Pirates Ahoy!' which will focus on teamwork and mathematical problem solving.

Throughout the year we are visited by Yumi, a Japanese teacher. The children are learning to count, say simple words and sing songs in Japanese. At Christmas, we enjoyed performing our end of term concert which celebrated the children's ideas of what Christmas means to them.
